The Spring Valley Garden Store, located in an old service station building on Main Street in Troy, Idaho, opened in spring of 2008. Business partners, Bobbi Calentine and Sue Westervelt, are both avid gardeners who had a common dream of running a business that sells plants and caters to the needs of regional gardeners. Spring is the busiest time for the store, when people are shaking off the winter doldrums and looking for color and living plants to spice up their lives. Although plants are the primary focus of Spring Valley Garden Store, they also carry vegetable, flower and herb seeds; natural and organic fertilizers and soil additives; pest control products; and other gardening needs. Local artists are encouraged to exhibit their artwork in the store. Regional artwork includes paintings, pottery, photos, gift cards, soaps and candles, decorative stepping stones and other garden art. Spring Valley Garden Store also offers a line of culinary herbs and teas. Calentine and Westervelt will be expanding their inventory to include other herbal products they will produce themselves. Plants evolve with the seasons. Late summer and fall brings an entirely different planting cycle, including bulbs that will bring beauty in the spring and early summer, and a variety of garlic to be planted in the fall that will mature the following summer. Late summer and early fall is also a great time to plant perennials that will be permanent features in gardens and yards.
